With an estimated base weight of approximately 550 lbs (249 kg), the Peak Performance Campers Stealth is the lightest camper we’ve ever made. Thanks to Peak’s Modu-Lock extruded aluminum frame component system, it’s also the most versatile, easily transforming from an empty composite shell with a pop-up roof to a fully equipped base camp. Rearrange these components to maximize comfort and adapt the camper to any length or purpose.
It’s always impressive to develop a motorhome that weighs around 1,000 lbs (454 kg), but for several years now a number of manufacturers have been reducing the weight down to triple digits. Peak Performance is the first we’ve come across that claims to cut that 1,000 lb (454 kg) figure almost in half, using a wood-free fibreglass-clad composite construction with an aluminium exoskeleton to keep the weight as low as possible.
The Stealth's estimated base weight of 550 lbs (250 kg) is 50 lbs (22 kg) lighter than our previous ultralight RV king, the teardrop model. TC Camper TruckPeak claims impressive weight while offering an extendable pop-top design with significantly more interior space than the TC's fixed, non-alcove roof, with a configurable main floor and a 76-by-54-inch (193-by-137-cm) alcove bed area. We don't quite buy Peak's claim that it can sleep up to six (not with any kind of self-respecting comfort, anyway), but with a couch or two, it could certainly accommodate three to four without becoming too cozy.
Peak continues to rely on aluminum-framed composite construction to craft lightweight, modular furniture and storage components that can be installed, removed, and rearranged in multiple ways. Discreet shoppers can design their ideal floor plan or even different floor plans for different trips, rearranging items based on factors like planned activities, number of people, required equipment, and more. Treat yourself to a digital nomad getaway on one trip, a rolling ski lodge on the next, a family camper, and more.
Peak has dubbed its system Modu-Lok and starts it with more than 100 feet of pre-installed L-track and nearly 150 pre-built mounting points in the Stealth base hull. From there, buyers can select modules and components, creating a lightweight yet functional interior.
Peak has been working overtime to develop various modules and detail them on its site. YouTube PageIt has introduced several kitchen units that feature an integrated single-burner sink/stove, slide-out refrigerator or shelf, water supply and storage. One of its top kitchen models even features a removable top, complete with stove, sink and countertop, that slides into a foldable stand for outdoor use. Peak claims the camper still weighs less than 700 lbs (318 kg) dry when equipped with several module options.
Beyond the full modules, Peak offers other storage and organization solutions, like MOLLE panels and ceiling straps, so users can make the most of their compact living space. Integrated mounting points and rail make it easy to add these accessories and continually update the build as you identify new issues and needs in the field.
Right now, Peak seems to be in a brainstorming phase, building and testing all sorts of concepts that come to mind. It would seem that it would be beneficial for him to develop a few specific retail components, unless he plans to focus on custom builds and use his own concepts as a springboard.
The Stealth has a narrow 1.9m long base and is designed to fit the majority of trucks on the US market, from full-size icons like the Ford F-Series and Ram 1500, to mid-size machines like the Toyota Tacoma. The base model starts at $24,000 USD and, while it’s essentially an empty camper shell, it includes the aforementioned Modu-Lok mounting points and rails, electrical pre-wiring, and an Apple iOS/CarPlay app that works with built-in leveling and moisture sensors, as well as add-on hardware.
Peak stresses that the Stealth is designed to be tough and rugged enough for off-roading, and the camper was developed and tested as a climbing approach vehicle and base camp. It is also developing a lighter wall-mounted camping mattress that could well rival the Catapult Launch as the most ready-to-model pop-up topper on the market.
