Summer is getting hotter (or cooler, depending on where you're reading this) and this time of year is one of the busiest for travel. Studying these trends can help us understand our behaviors, influences on travel decisions, and predict the years to come.
In this first edition of FLYR’s quarterly State of Hospitality report, we delve into the key trends we’re seeing in our hospitality data, illustrating how travelers around the world are planning their stays. Supporting hotels, motels, and hostels in 50 countries, we examined anonymized booking data from June to August 2024 and June to August 2023 to identify what some of the year’s biggest travel trends are shaping up to be.
This summer, travelers from the United States have their sights set on Europe, Asia, and Oceania, with particular interest in the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands. These trends do not represent a major shift from U.S. travel habits in 2023, which were also dominated by travel to Europe.
Looking at thousands of hotels around the world, in 2024, Americans are planning their excursions to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain (looking at the months of June through August). The 2023 trend list was closely comparable, indicating that Europe is still a top destination for Americans looking for a change of scenery to explore.
Countries are in competition
While many of us will be watching the 2024 Olympics from home, some superfans have planned their summer trips to watch their favorite athletes compete in person in Paris, France.
Hotels in Paris, France are seeing an average 50% increase in occupancy from July 26 to August 11, 2024, compared to the same dates in 2023, and a very strong expectation of sales during this period.
Of course, many French people and residents of neighboring countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, book places in Paris to be closer to the action.
Outside of those two countries, fans from the United States and Australia have travelled in droves across the oceans to watch their teams compete. Interestingly, while Australia has nearly 200 fewer athletes competing at the Games this year, Australian travellers have booked more than four times as many rooms per capita as US travellers, according to 2023 population estimates. Other top visitors come from Brazil, Canada, Mexico and China.
