Terrorists attempted to paralyze the City of Lights on the day of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris by setting coordinated fires in an attempt to disrupt high-speed rail system in France.
Much like the recent global technology outage, transportation disruptions can be an effective means of disruption.
An estimated 800,000 people were affected, including some athletes trying to reach the city of Paris for the opening ceremony. No deaths or injuries were reported.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal called the attacks “premeditated” and “calculated.”
“It is unacceptable to disrupt such a festival of peace with acts of violence and this demands the most determined rejection,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Most of the rail network is expected to be restored on Saturday. France was 15 million visitors are expected for the Olympic Games.
Also on Friday, a small suburban French airport was briefly evacuated and it was unclear whether it was linked to the rail attacks.
