Traveling alone raises additional questions: Is it safe to arrive at night? What is the crime rate? Are single room rates affordable? Is the tour worth it? The truth is that every destination is different, and so is every experience. Backpacking through New Zealand is different than busking through Colombia. However, there are a few destinations that have a reputation for being both safe and affordable for solo travelers.
Taipei, Taiwanwas recently named the best city for solo travel by Buya US-based retailer. They rated over 300 cities on several key metrics including their safety rating, cost of dining, walkability score and number of things to do on Tripadvisor.
Here are the most affordable and safest destinations for solo travelers
Taipei stands out for its high safety score (84.5 out of 100) and affordable dining options. According to Ubuy, a meal at a cheap restaurant in Taipei costs an average of $6.17 (INR515), and a bottle of water costs an average of $0.71 (INR14). Solo travelers looking for a single hotel room with a view can expect to pay an average of $86 (INR7,181), which is a bargain compared to the average rate of $221 (INR18,454) that solo travelers in Abu Dhabi might pay for similar accommodation.
Taipei also ranks highly in walkability, with a score of 86 out of 100. The city's composite score was 95.7 out of 100.
After Taipei was the neighboring city of Hong Kongwhich received a perfect score of 100 for its walkability, but was more expensive. A meal at a cheap restaurant was around $8.83 (INR 699), while a hotel room with a view cost, on average, around $142 (INR 11,857) per night.
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and Doha, Qatar, occupy the 3rd and 4th place respectively. After four destinations from the Asian continent, which dominate the list, it is Munich, Germany, which comes in 5th position.
The Ubuy team says solo travelers looking for an affordable vacation should look to Muscat, Oman, which “offers the most affordable options for dining and hotel stays, making it the perfect place for solo getaways on a budget.” (In Muscat, a meal at an expensive restaurant costs an average of $5.20 (INR 434) and a hotel with a view costs an average of $51 (INR 4,258) per night.)
