Today Flydubai Boeing has announced the launch of a vast project to modernize the cabins of the majority of its next-generation Boeing aircraft. The airline plans to complete the multimillion-dollar program before the end of the year.
Fleet details and expansion
- Currently, Flydubai operates a diverse fleet comprising 29 Boeing 737-800s, 54 737 MAX 8s and 3 737 MAX 9s. In 2024, the airline expanded its fleet by adding two more aircraft, bringing the total to 86 Boeing 737s. With supply chain challenges affecting delivery schedules, Flydubai expects to receive six additional aircraft by the end of this year.
Details of the modernization initiative
- The renovation project, revealed at the Arabian Travel Market, began in January. Already, eight aircraft have undergone a complete cabin overhaul. The upgrade introduces lie-flat business class seats and new Recaro economy seats, which align with the cabin product on Flydubai’s new aircraft.
- All upgraded aircraft are equipped with in-flight entertainment systems to provide a consistent and enhanced travel experience. Some aircraft will retain a fully economy configuration, but will be equipped with upgraded Recaro Economy seats with on-board entertainment.
- Other improvements include an increase in seat pitch from 45 to 53 inches in lie-flat business class seats on some newer aircraft, scheduled to be implemented after the summer, aimed at improving comfort on short- and medium-haul flights.
Operational growth and increase in passenger numbers
- Flydubai has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers, with almost five million passengers carried through April 28 this year, an increase of 13% compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to the airline's expanded network, which now includes more than 125 destinations in 58 countries.
- The airline increased frequencies on several routes, including to Colombo, Doha, Krakow and Milan, reflecting strong demand and increased market presence. Flydubai also expanded its presence in South East Asia and continued its expansion into African and European markets.
CEO Statement on Future Operations
- Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of Flydubai, commented on the growth, highlighting the challenges posed by delays in aircraft deliveries, but affirmed that the airline is prepared for one of its busiest summers ever with the upcoming seasonal schedule. He stressed the importance of the modernisation project to ensure a superior and consistent passenger experience on board.
