Cedar Rapids — It's one of the busiest holiday times here in Eastern Iowa and with temperatures warming up across the region, that heat can wreak havoc on your tires.
Right now is National Tire Safety Week and Discount Tire officials are sharing tire safety tips with travelers ahead of the July 4th WeekendSome of these tire safety tips include things like:
- Checking your tire pressure.
- Make sure all of your alignment is in good shape.
- Watch your tread.
- Rotate your tires as needed.
Iowa's News Now spoke with Fausto Martinez, manager of Blairs Ferry Discount Tire, on Tuesday to talk about tire safety.
“Know what your spare part looks like, in case you need to use it,” Martinez said. “Is it up to date? Is it less than 10 years old? Is it properly distributed? In case you need it long term, that’s one of the things we encourage, for sure.”
Martinez provided several tire safety tips for travelers, including:
- Reduce the weight of your vehicle
- Reduce your driving time/make more stops to rest
On Monday, Martinez said the classic way to make sure your tire tread is in good shape is to do the penny test. If you can't see Lincoln's face, the tire tread is in good shape. But if you can see most of his face, then it's time to replace that tire.
