New search for Bonjourtickets reveals the The Best and Worst European Travel Destinations for American Allergy People this summer. More than 80 million Americans (25%) suffer from allergic rhinitis (hay fever)and going abroad offers no escape, especially when exposed to new plant species and seasonal differences in high pollen counts.
Using data from the Copernicus atmosphere monitoring service and the most searched European destinations by Americans from Google Travel Insights, Bonjourtickets has analyzed plant species, pollen counts and seasonal differences to find out where and when hay fever sufferers should travel to avoid unpleasant allergy symptoms.
Reykjavík, Iceland, comes out on top overall as one of the best destinations, with low pollen counts and low levels of other allergens all year round, with Portugal, more precisely Lisbonwhich was rated well for its low levels of tree pollen all year round.
Milan and CopenhagenHowever, are among the cities most affected by pollen allergies, with the highest pollen counts several months of the year.
Main results:
Tree Pollen: Iceland and Portugal are two of the best year-round countries for this allergy, particularly Reykjavik and Lisbon.
Grass pollen: Reykjavik offers the most respite for 5 out of 12 months of the year, with Dublin also a good choice at certain times.
Weed Pollen: Reykjavík and Edinburgh are the best summer destinations.
Reykjavík is clearly one of the best cities to visit for those with seasonal allergies, as it has the lowest pollen levels and is almost always one of the best cities for allergens all year round .
Commenting on the study, Dr Claire MerrifieldGP and Selph Medical Director, said: “People who suffer from hay fever may find that they actually have fewer symptoms, or in some cases more severe symptoms, when they are abroad . Indeed, the types of pollen vary depending on the country. and variations in climate and weather also mean that pollen seasons can be very different.
Some people find that when they move to another country, they develop new hay fever symptoms. This is because they are exposed to different types of allergens that their immune system has never seen before.
Bad hay fever symptoms can really rob you of the fun of traveling abroad. So it's worth thinking ahead if you suffer from hay fever, researching pollen levels in the country you're visiting and preparing to deal with symptoms while you're away. “
Weather, location and pollution also play an important role.
While coastal cities tend to have lower pollen counts, especially due to humidity, many factors work against this, such as inland winds, pollution, and other weather conditions.
Humidity reduces symptoms and light to moderate rain can help, but heavy rain can break pollen into smaller particles and increase pollen concentrations.
Pollution, especially ozone, also has a negative impact on allergies. Air pollutants can change the composition of pollen, increasing the potency of pollen allergens and triggering stronger allergic reactions. Additionally, research shows that plants grown in polluted areas release more pollen for a longer period of time.
Weather and wind are unpredictable when planning a vacation in advance, but avoiding heavily polluted cities during peak pollen allergy season will be a big help.
To prevent further hay fever symptoms during the holidays, Dr. Merrifield recommends: “It seems obvious, but spending less time outside when pollen counts are high is a good start. If you can, shower and change when you get home to reduce the pollen load in your living space. Temporary living If you suffer from hay fever, it's a good idea to bring a supply of medications that you know will work for you. I recommend taking eye drops, a nasal spray, and. antihistamine tablets.
