Some of the best travel experiences revolve around culture: tasting it, hearing it, seeing it, immersing yourself in it. That's certainly true in Texas, and especially in San Antonio, where you'll discover a tapestry of history, local cuisine, art, nightlife, and so much more. Out sent traveling couple Mike and Anne Howard from HoneyTrek to explore San Antonio and immerse yourself in Texas culture. The Howards have been traveling as digital nomads since 2012 and have explored cultures around the world, making them the perfect travelers for a deep dive into the heart of Texas. Here's what they discovered.
Get a history lesson
Start your trip by getting the lay of the land on a guided historical tour of the city. That you explore walk, by bikeOr on a boat, a local guide will bring the city to life with the stories and history that developed the South Texas culture you see today. Are you opting for a DIY approach? Get on board an electric BCycle bike to explore at your own pace. Hike 16 miles of trails that connect the San Antonio Missions, Texas' only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the early 1700s, the missions played a vital role in combining Native and Spanish influences into a new South Texas culture. “Walking under the holm oaks of the missions while soaking up the history is a truly special experience,” explains Anne. The trails are as much an experience as the missions themselves. Along the way, you'll pass local art installations and cycle through lush green spaces where local plants thrive.
If you prefer natural history, explore the Natural Bridge Caverns just outside of town. Guided cave tours range from lantern walking tours to more active caving experiences.
Explore local art
From colorful murals that give off a unique San Antonio vibe to museums and galleries showcasing works by local and international artists, San Antonio is bursting with creative expression. One of the most innovative: Hopscotch, an immersive art experience where visitors wander through 20,000 square feet of larger-than-life installations filled with fascinating, interactive elements that engage all five senses. Explore hidden pockets of color in the Rainbow Cave. Or unleash your inner child in the LED ball pit. Because new artists are constantly invited to exhibit their work, no two visits to Hopscotch are the same. “The art installations change frequently with works by local artists, so there’s always a new reason to come back,” says Anne.
Taste the Flavors of Texas
Texas residents take their food seriously, with Texas-style dishes and flavors you won't find anywhere else. Reserve a spot on a San Antonio River Walk food tour to sample some of the best cuisine in South Texas. As an important part of the livestock industry – more than 13 percent of the nation's livestock are raised in the state – much of Texas cuisine is beef-based. In Texas, barbecue means brisket smoked to perfection and served without sauce, because, as the Texans say, the meat East Texas barbecue. Chili, another hotly contested dish, takes on a distinct flavor in Texas. Made with roast rather than ground beef, and never with beans, Texas chili is a point of pride among locals. Of course, it wouldn't be a San Antonio food tour without Tex-Mex and tacos, two important parts of Texas cuisine. And don't sleep on the breakfast taco, a staple of the San Antonio brunch scene. Eddie's Taco House serves a variety of egg-based taco creations to start your day.
Vegetarian or vegan? Don't worry! Many restaurants have adapted famous Texas dishes to offer plant-based options. “From bars to small cafes, the vegan dining options are fantastic and new restaurants are popping up all the time,” says Mike.
Go out on the town
Sometimes the best way to get a feel for a city is to soak up the atmosphere at a local watering hole. During the day, head to the Pearl. This work, play and live community is a hub for creative cuisine, art, music and shopping. Browse the shops filled with products from local artisans. Enjoy live music at Stable room. Or just relax and take it all in with an afternoon drink at Southerleigh Brewery and Fine Dining. “San Antonio's nightlife presents a beautiful combination of living history, creativity and modern charm that is fun to experience and enjoy,” says Mike.
In the evening, check out the downtown scene. Filled with restaurants, theaters, public art, and nightlife, this neighborhood showcases San Antonio culture like no other. Dine close to the action at iron cactus. The patio directly overlooking the river is ideal for sipping margs and feasting on the restaurant's famous brisket enchiladas. After dinner, take a stroll down River Walk and hit one of the neighborhood's many cocktail bars or music venues that strike your fancy.
