Atlas is now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo was lifted late last night – shortly before the film was due to premiere on the streamer.
While this isn't always the case, it's generally not a good indicator of quality and, of course, the reviews have been pretty dire so far.
The sci-fi action film directed by Brad Peyton stars Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers, Cell) as Atlas Shepard, “a woman who fights for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined that the only way to end the war is to end humanity. To surpass this A rogue AI, Atlas must work with the thing she fears most – another AI.”
The AI-centric plot is appropriate, as Atlas looks like it was generated by ChatGPT.
We haven't re-watched the film in its entirety, but it's essentially a hodgepodge of well-worn tropes and ideas that have been executed much better in other films, further let down by a by-the-numbers storyline, Atrocious dialogue and unconvincing lead performances.
Some spoke out in defense of Atlasbut positive verdicts are rare on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film currently sits at an abysmal 10% with 31 reviews counted.

Jennifer Lopez's “Atlas” is the kind of Netflix trash you keep on in the background while you do some housework, just to remind yourself that there are worse things in life than folding a (damn) towel. pic.twitter.com/flBWW7ItTg

Netflix and Jennifer Lopez's Atlas is like a contrived sci-fi movie that walks and talks like the real thing, but just isn't. https://t.co/hHfvlTd4TQ

As a Jennifer Lopez fan and cheerleader, I'm disappointed to share this #ATLAS is our daughter dirty, dulling her shine. My opinion on pro-AI propaganda via @TheAVClub: https://t.co/xVeoL1pCa1

#ATLAS is a fun AI adventure with superb world-building and an intriguing, if familiar, story. Lopez, Brown, Liu and Cohan form a formidable ensemble, which brings the film to life (especially with the comic duo of J Lo & Cohan).
