KILLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We introduced you to a group of friends in Killington last spring who were hosting their annual “Dual Day”: skiing and wake surfing on the same day.. This year, they upped the ante.
With water and air temperatures of 47 degrees to the mid-50s, Monday was a perfect day to head to North Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, for sunrise surfing. It was Adam Smith's idea, although he hesitated after talking to his friend.
“You know, the weather doesn't look very good. What do you think?' And he said, “If we don't do it this year, we'll only be one year older when we do it.” “And that's a quote from Warren Miller,” said Smith of Waterford, New York.
From ocean waves to Vermont ski slopes, Smith and lifelong friend Bryon Knight made the trip to Killington's Superstar Trail for the second stop of their trio.
“A lot of people do a threesome in California where they snowboard, surf and skateboard, but we couldn't find anything for the East Coast, so we just thought it would be kind of fun to try,” said Smith. .
Then, spring snow at Ballston Lake in upstate New York, the final leg of their outdoor adventure. They documented their journey along the way, joined by other friends for various stops.
“Well, it’s a bit surreal, isn’t it?” Smith said.
I met the Dual Day group last year, when only skiing and wake surfing were on the agenda. They added the ocean this year, just because they can.
“The juxtaposition is kind of what makes it so fun,” Smith said.
Knight was not available for an interview Monday. Yes, these guys have day jobs. That’s when they’re not on the water, bouncing on moguls, or attending that morning session.
“People just need to understand what’s out there and find your own adventure.” Go and get it. That's what it's about. You know, that was our winning trio, but everyone can have theirs,” Smith said.
The group is looking to recruit more people for next year's trio and has already renamed the event “From Ocean to Slope to Rope.”
