The summer reading program is just around the corner and this year's theme is “Adventure Begins in Your Library.”
The summer reading program is important for several reasons. The summer months can lead to a decline in learning called “summer creep,” a phenomenon well documented by educators. Students who do not read while out of school may see their reading skills decline and could find themselves up to two years behind those who read year-round. Reading just five books during the summer months can prevent this.
Here are some of the many great programs that will be featured in all Tangipahoa Parish Library branches this summer:
- Animal Tales – During this live show, get up close and personal with animals from around the world!
- Miss Kim's Petting Zoo – On Saturdays this summer, come pet goats, sheep, llamas, rabbits, a mini donkey, a mini pony and other farm animals.
- Yuck Show – This live science show allows children to participate in elaborate science games and watch amazing demonstrations.
- Louisiana Snake ID – Kevin Hood helps people understand the place of snakes in nature and he brings snakes you can hold!
- The Dinosaur Experience – The dinosaurs are back! This program combines humor, education and practical experiences.
To register for the online program, go to www.tangilibrary.com. You can also register at any branch.
There are incentives for signing up and prizes for reading. However, the real prize of summer reading is a better life and a better understanding of the world.
I encourage everyone in our parish to read and to read to others. Include the Tangipahoa Parish Library in your summer plans. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program today. You'll be glad you did.
