Some tourist attractions get a lot of hype but don't live up to expectations. But sometimes one of these world-famous “traps” can leave you completely stunned. “Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. It looks like it should be the home of a particularly successful wizard.

“The Terracotta Warriors in Xian, China. You approach a very unimpressive and inconspicuous entrance, but then you turn a corner and it is simply breathtaking.”

“The Smithsonian museums in DC, near the Capitol building. They are all free and range from very good to incredible world class.”

“The Path of the Gods hiking trail on the Amalfi Coast. It's absolutely incredible and the views you get from there are some of the best in the world.”

“The Alhambra in Granada, Spain is incredible…especially if you can see it at night.”

“Machu Picchu. It's especially impressive if you have the courage to climb the death trap staircase to the top of Huayna Picchu. The scenery and ruins are absolutely magnificent.”
