LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Kentucky Derby is just days away.
Airports, like Blue Grass Airport, are expecting higher than normal passenger volumes.
In preparation, they are not only hiring additional staff, but also making sure travelers know what will and will not pass through the TSA checkpoint.
“Here at Blue Grass Airport, we are expecting between 2,600 and 2,700 passengers per day on Sunday and Monday after the races,” said Mark Howell, regional TSA spokesperson.
Airport officials say passengers should expect wait times.
Howell says there are some things passengers can do to help move things along at the checkpoint.
“Check the inside of your bag before coming to the airport. Make sure you don't have these prohibited items in your bag.
This includes items such as firearms, pepper spray, knives, self-defense items, and liquids over 3.4 ounces.
“TSA finds them and gives the passenger the option of returning the items to their vehicle or giving them to someone with them or they can give them up to TSA,” TSA Agent Robbie Gray said.
Gray says they've collected about two dozen bottles of alcohol over the past 30 days or so. However, they said passengers should not be discouraged from buying a bottle as a souvenir this weekend.
“Make sure you put them in your checked luggage and pack them properly so they can get back to your destination without a problem,” Howell said.
Big Derby Day hats and fascinators will also be popular items that pass through security.
“If they are exceptionally large, you may also want to check them when you get back, so put them in a box and check them,” Howell said.
The TSA says that often people know what is not allowed; they just don't pay attention when packing.
“Be sure to check all side pockets and front pockets. Make sure there is nothing inside, then start packing from scratch. That way you won’t make any mistakes,” Howell said.
Airport officials are also reminding people to arrive at the airport early. They recommend being indoors two hours before your flight.
