According to Deepak Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Northern Railway, the move is aimed at reducing unnecessary use of drinking water. By providing smaller 500 ml bottles, the railways aims to better accommodate the shorter travel distances typically seen in Vande Bharat trains, as opposed to longer journeys like those on Rajdhani trains.
The move echoes a similar initiative implemented on Shatabdi trains, where passengers were also provided with 500 ml Rail Neer bottles instead of the larger 1 liter bottles, recognizing the limited water requirements for long journeys. a maximum duration of 8.5 hours.
As part of a wider effort to promote water conservation, Central Railways is actively using recycled water for cleaning coaches and platforms, harnessing around one crore liters of recycled water in 32 daily recycling plants.
Additionally, rainwater harvesting units have been installed at 158 sites, and the establishment of three automatic coach washing stations has also contributed to water conservation efforts. Besides, Central Railways has undertaken extensive afforestation projects, planting five lakh trees at various sites to restore and maintain the local ecosystem.
