A few weeks ago, an Axios Richmond writer made a dismissive reference to “whatever is west of Roanoke.”
I wrote a defending column of “whatever is west of Roanoke” which lit up our street sign and also earned me speaking invitations.
I also received a lot of fan mail (I think the Axios writer also received some mail, but perhaps of a different nature).
Not all of that fan mail came from west Roanoke.
I also heard from a reader from Arlington who confessed that he had never been west of Roanoke and would like to come visit this part of the state for himself: “I'm a roadtripper who likes to drive leisurely on non-interstate highways and stop at small town cafes, listen to what local people say, etc. “, he wrote, “so I'm planning a road trip to Bristol and beyond to Cumberland Gap later this spring. »
I thought about offering this reader some suggestions on what to see and do, but then I had a better idea: why not ask you?
So this is it !
What would you suggest our Arlington visitor – who prefers not to be named – see and do on this side of the state?
We have create a form to fill out to share your travel tips, which we will use in a future column.
Don't limit yourself to West Roanoke travel tips, either. Unless arriving by air, visitors to the southwest state of Virginia will have to pass through either the Shenandoah Valley and the Roanoke Valley (if traveling on Interstate 81 or US 11 ), or via Southside and Lynchburg (if using Interstate 81 or US 11). coming on US 460) – so consider this a general invitation to share travel tips throughout Cardinal's coverage area.
If you took photos of your favorite travel spot to show off, share them on news@cardinalnews.org — please include your name and location, and put “travel” in the subject line. We will be sure to give you credit if we use it.
Here is my modest contribution. If you're driving down the Shenandoah Valley, I suggest stopping in the town of Buchanan to see that town's famous swing bridge spanning the James River (see photo above). If you're brave, you can even cross to the other side.
These are some of the travel tips I have. What do you have ?
