(Milan, Indiana) – A teenager from Milan is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
On April 21, 17-year-old Isaac Garrett will set off on a 21-day trek to Everest Base Camp ER as part of a wilderness medicine exploration group.
Garrett has been planning this trip for over a year.
“When my mom first asked me if I wanted to do it, all I thought was, 'Wow, how many kids can say they've been to Mount Everest.' The next step was to ask my principal and teachers if they would approve a 26-day absence. Isaac attends Community Christian Academy in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, where he is a junior this year. “My principal, Mrs. Bates, didn’t even hesitate. She said absolutely: we will make this work. This started my preparation process.
Garrett will begin his trip from Kathmandu, Nepal, on April 23 and spend a day acclimatizing to the altitude.
He will trek for 11 days totaling 40 miles to reach Everest Base Camp, located at 18,192 feet above sea level. For comparison, Milan is 991 feet above sea level.
When he reaches Everest Base Camp, Garrett will observe those returning from their attempted climb to the world's highest peak. He will be able to learn about frostbite, snow blindness, flash pulmonary edema and other injuries that can occur when climbing Everest.
The Milan native will also learn nature medicine from some of the world's most renowned doctors who have set the standards for nature medicine.
“I can't even understand this adventure. All I know is that I am grateful to God for allowing me to see His beauty. I hope this inspires others around me to get out and enjoy nature. Limitations are optional and the adventure is endless. Just get up from behind the computer or phone and start by taking the first step. Isaac hopes to inspire others to get out and explore. “Part of the business I hope to inherit, Empowering Wilderness Training, helps remove barriers faced by those who don't know where to start exploring the great outdoors. We hope to create a community where no matter who you are or your experience level, you can come hike with us. You can come camp with us. You can come kayak with us. You can come rock climbing with us and we will teach you, this way you can inspire others to do the same.
