Spring may have just begun, but it's not too early to start planning for this year's peak summer travel season, especially if you want to make sure your favorite flights and hotels don't sell out. But maybe you haven't decided on your destination yet, whether you're looking for a sought-after location on American soil or looking for something overseas.
Maybe you need a little inspiration or just want to know where everyone else is going so you can avoid encountering large crowds. Either way, you'll benefit from insights into the most searched summer travel destinations in 2024, according to Google Flights data. To inform its rankings, Google compiled the number of searches made by U.S. users for each destination with travel dates ranging from June 1 to August 31.
Some of Google Flights' top 20 are the usual contenders, although there are a few surprises in the mix. London appears to be the top choice for American travelers this summer, with Paris close behind in second place. This should come as no surprise given that the Paris Olympics are fast approaching.
Tokyo is in third place, moving up from eighth on last year's list, followed by Rome in fourth and New York in fifth. Cancun, America's perennial warm-weather favorite, fell from second place on the 2023 list to sixth place this year. The 2024 list also welcomes newcomers Madrid and San Juan, who occupy 18th and 20th places, respectively.
Several more popular domestic destinations made the top 20, including Boston, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and Seattle, although this year Chicago and San Francisco fell off the list.
Google Flights also shared with The Points Guy its ranking of the five most searched global destinations when it comes to a few niche market segments: couples, families and solo travelers. Interestingly, the Turks and Caicos Islands are the only place to make the top five in all three categories.
