This is the first in a series of articles focusing on advisors specializing in destinations perceived to be geopolitically contested. Here's a look at how Egypt expert Rhonda Nawawi, CTA, an independent entrepreneur with Travel Adventures Unlimited, dispels myths about the destination.
How did you develop your specialty in selling Egypt?
Having been born in Egypt and living there for many years and returning frequently, specializing in Egypt as a destination was a natural choice for me.
I started by making connections and constantly updating my knowledge about the destination.
I achieved this through frequent visits, maintaining local contacts, familiarizing myself with various tour operators, learning about hotels, cruises and attractions, and keeping up to date with the latest developments and news. Monitoring political, social and security conditions is essential to providing clients with accurate information and advice.
How can we allay customer concerns about the destination?
I start by conducting an initial consultation with clients to understand their preferences and expectations. Collecting information about their past trips and their feedback is essential. I discuss cultural norms and customs to offer advice on appropriate dress codes, especially at religious sites, and local etiquette to enhance their comfort during the trip. I also inquire about any health and safety concerns they may have, reassuring them to address their concerns.
How can advisors clear up misconceptions about Egypt?
One of the most persistent misconceptions regarding Egypt it's security. Many potential travelers still worry about political instability in Egypt. I address this issue by providing accurate and up-to-date information on current conditions. I highlight the efforts and strict security measures implemented by the Egyptian government to ensure the safety of tourists.
Unfortunately, media coverage often highlights negative events, contributing to misconceptions about safety. Egypt, like many countries around the world, could face security challenges.
However, it is not accurate to say that this country is inherently less secure than the United States, for example. The level of security in Egypt, compared to that in the United States, depends on one's point of view. Foreign travelers often have similar concerns when considering a trip to the United States. Many travelers visit Egypt every year without facing security concerns and enjoy the rich history and culture the country offers.
