HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Before you get ready to head out on your spring break, Huntsville International Airport, with the help of some Rocket City mascots, wants to offer some travel tips to get you through the TSA quickly and securely.
When packing a carry-on bag, Tara Corse, Alabama's federal security director, suggests “starting from scratch.” Make sure the bag is completely empty in case there are any illegal or prohibited items that could slow you down at a TSA checkpoint.
“For spring break, we want to make sure we provide the safest and easiest experience for our passengers,” Corse said. “That said, we want them to completely empty their bags and make sure they understand that things may be hiding underneath.”
Rukus and Chaos from Huntsville Havoc alongside Sprocket from Trash Pandas brought a few things that needed to be checked out. At the airport, they learned to remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels and aerosols. If a bottle contains more than 3.4 ounces of fluid, it should be checked.
Corsica said the TSA has seen an increase in gun interceptions at the airport. She explains that even though you can transport a gun, it's important that it's properly packaged.
“What we're trying to do is send the message that you can carry your guns without question, but we want them to do it safely and we want them to do it through luggage recorded. Once you arrive at the airport, go ahead and join your airline. You’re going to have your file, it’s going to be locked appropriately,” Corse said.
20 firearms have been intercepted at Huntsville International Airport in 2023, and three have been intercepted so far this year.
