Emmy-winning television personality Carson Kressley is known for gracing the small screen on shows like “RuPaul's Drag Race” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”
But Kressley, known for his keen fashion sense, is also a travel expert. He was recently named the 2024 Travel Advisor Champion by ALG Vacations.
Kressley says travel has always played a major role in his life.
“Travel has been a big part of my life since working for Ralph Lauren,” he told Scripps News. “Before I started working in fashion in television, I was styling a lot of Ralph Lauren commercials and traveling to exotic places, with, you know, puppies and models, and it was wonderful. But it felt great to me. really interested in traveling and exploring.”
“I think it's the best way to stay inspired as a designer, whether it's an interior designer or a fashion designer, traveling really opens up the world to you and is so inspiring. That's why I love it, and this relationship was a natural fit because of that,” he said.
Kressley joined Scripps News on Tuesday to share some travel tips for a more affordable and less stressful vacation.
He praised all-inclusive accommodations because travelers will know in advance what they are spending.
“The great thing about an all-inclusive package is you know exactly how much it’s going to cost you,” Kressley said. “Because your food, your drinks, a lot of your excursions, your accommodation are all included in the price you pay, so there will be no surprises.”
Kressley also suggested purchasing in advance.
“Book early,” he said. “Most resorts or theme parks, special destinations, want to fill their book for the coming year. So the earlier you book, the better your deal will be.”
Kressley suggested speaking to a travel advisor when making a purchase because they are wholesalers who buy in bulk, and thus get better rates. Travel advisors can bundle airfare, hotels, and tours together to get better deals. Kressley recommended companies like Funjet or Apple Vacations.
Although he acknowledged that it seems counterintuitive when trying to save money, Kressley also talked about the importance of purchasing travel insurance.
“It's definitely worth it because, for example, if you and your family of four are getting ready to go on spring break – maybe you're going to Disney or something – you arrive at the airport, your flight is canceled,” he said. . “Traditionally, this would take a whole day out of your trip. But with travel insurance, you can simply choose another airline and buy a new ticket on the spot, at the airport. The vacation is saved, and that only amounts to a fraction of the cost of the trip. So travel insurance is something I highly recommend.”
Kressley joined Scripps News the same day his TV boss' memoir, RuPaul's “The House of Hidden Meanings,” became available. Kressley said he will definitely bring this on his next vacation.
