FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where should I stay in Bali?
Bali is divided into a handful of tourist neighbors, the most popular being Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud, Canggu, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua.
Seminyak is a hub of activity and is a mecca for anyone looking to really treat themselves. It offers world-class restaurants, shopping, beachfront hotels and beach clubs.
Kuta is renowned for its long, sandy beaches and all-inclusive resorts. It is popular with families and beginners and is ideally located a 10-minute drive from the famous Waterbom Bali Water Park.
Ubud is more aimed at everyone who wants to relax and get away from the crowds. It lies inland and is home to a number of wellness retreats, treehouses and jungle stays. Adventurous activities such as waterfall rappelling and whitewater rafting are also at your doorstep.
Canggu is hip, cool and a little edgy. Escape writer Jenny Hewett sums it up best when she describes it as “if Bondi and Brooklyn had a love child.” Yoga studios and green juices are plentiful, as is nightlife.
Uluwatu This is where you will find some of the most famous waves on the island. If you brought your surfboard with you, we hope you've booked a stay in this area. If you're on a budget, Uluwatu's position away from the main tourist strip means it offers a mix of budget guesthouses as well as more luxurious accommodation.
Nusa Dua is for those who want a quiet beach vacation. Expect luxury resorts, long sandy beaches and calm waters. The sunsets here are also very good.
What is the best month to go to Bali?
August is the driest month of the year to visit Bali. However, this can be expensive. If you prefer a little more flexibility, the period from May to the end of September is ideal for a beach holiday in Bali, as it is the dry season.
Is Bali safe?
Bali is generally safe to visit as a tourist. Petty thefts can occur in busy areas, so it's a good idea to be careful of your belongings and keep an eye out for snatches and seizures on motorcycles.
Being a volcanic island, Bali frequently experiences earthquakes. For the safety, Escape writer Jenny Hewett recommends you download a warning app or stay in the public bulletins section of the Tsunami early warning system in Indonesia.
It's also a good idea to purchase travel insurance that covers earthquakes so you're covered for unexpected costs if your plans are upended by this natural disaster.
