Warning: the following features are spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3…
Sonic 3 takes inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2, the 2001 Dreamcast title that helped cement Blue Blur as a 3D platforming icon while simultaneously unleashing Shadow the Hedgehog on the world.
While the live-action trio follows the story beats and broad narrative brushstrokes of Sonic Adventure 2, one of the main differences involves the character of Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
Namely, he's still alive and (somehow) active in Sonic 3, despite being a 114-year-old man. This is a marked change from Sonic Adventure 2's use of Gerald Robotnik via flashbacks and old recorded messages.
“The biggest change, actually, was making sure that Gerald was still alive; bringing Gerald into the present instead of just being a flashback villain that only exists in the past, because there There's just a limit to how many flashbacks we want to have.” Pat Casey, co-writer of Sonic 3, reveals this to GamesRadar+.
“We wanted to make him more of a danger, making us a real villain, because we knew from the beginning that we wanted to find an opportunity to bring more things together between Sonic and Ivo. The idea of having them team up “So was a big thing on the to-do list, although obviously such a team was always temporary.”
Co-writer Josh Miller says bringing Gerald Robotnik into the mix creates a new dynamic for Jim Carrey's film. other Robotnik, Ivo (also known as Eggman by his enemies).
“It became such a big part of the Sonic movie franchise that Ivo was an orphan, so it was hard to resist the idea of what would happen if he suddenly found out he had a family member.” , Miller said. “Since the Sonic films are all about found families.”
Casey adds, “I mean, for me, the Sonic movies are about crushing loneliness. I remember people were making memes about that after Sonic 2 and it's kind of true, and Ivo is one of them. So this is what happened to him if he thought he was no longer alone.
