Looking for a respite from the daily grind and wanting to recharge before vacation, I was thrilled to learn of a place in the Mexican Caribbean called Isla Mujeres, “the island of women “. Located 8 miles off the coast of Cancun in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, this 5-mile-long island provides a beautiful and serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotel zone. It was exactly what I was looking for, so I booked a 4 day trip! This would be my first time traveling alone for a vacation, slightly out of my comfort zone, and I was concerned that I would feel out of place among the families, couples, and groups of friends also looking for an island getaway. But nothing could be further from the truth. There was no shortage of things to do and the resort staff and locals were very welcoming. It was a wonderful home away from home.
After a short direct flight to Cancun International Airport, I took a quick taxi to the ferry and enjoyed a 20-minute boat ride with local musical entertainment on the upper deck. As soon as the ferry leaves the continent, the rhythm of life changes. The waters turn a deeper blue, the air smells of salt and vacation, and the world seems to slow down to the gentle rocking of the boat.
When I arrived at the 5 star all inclusive Mía Reef Isla Mujeres Resort, my breath was taken away as I gazed at the long bridge that led to this paradise that I would call home for the next few days. The private beach, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the delicious margaritas and other cocktails, the exceptional service and the most wonderful staff I have ever met were always ready. Swimming in the crystal clear turquoise waters surrounded by all the beautiful colorful fish was magnificent. And there were plenty of cool things to enjoy on the resort grounds, including live music and flamenco dancers in the evening!
On the second day I took a 4 hour guided snorkeling tour at the Isla Mujeres Underwater Art Museum (MUSA), an impressive collection of more than 500 life-size underwater sculptures. I learned that the museum, part of a conservation effort to promote marine life, was created to alleviate pressure on the area's natural coral reefs by providing an alternative space for divers and divers to explore. snorkelers. By creating artificial structures, it encourages the flourishing of marine life and keeps visitors away from fragile natural reefs. There were 8 other people on my tour: three couples and a mother-daughter duo. Our boat driver and snorkeling guide were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The whole group had a wonderful time and we enjoyed each other's company as we explored the beautiful sculptures and coral reefs, swimming alongside lots of tropical fish. Swimming in the calm and surreal underwater world was an unforgettable experience, like being in a dream.
I then returned to Mía and enjoyed a 50-minute Swedish massage in the hotel spa (A++ for pampering – I left feeling like a relaxed puddle of mush), followed by a light dinner. -be the most delicious I have ever had in any of the hotel's hotels. four restaurants, Las Marías. The fresh grilled octopus was plump, juicy and a culinary masterpiece. After feeling pleasantly full, I returned to my room and enjoyed a mojito on my private balcony overlooking the ocean.
Perhaps my favorite place to visit was on the third day, the Garrafón Reef Parkan eco-park located at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres. It's a great destination for those looking for a mix of relaxation, adventure and nature. I started by enjoying the refreshing infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean, then doing some more snorkeling with the magnificent fish. Although I didn't see any sea turtles that day, they are said to be seen there often! Everything I did at the park is included in admission: authentic Mexican buffet lunch, unlimited frozen cocktails and drinks, kayaking, paddleboarding, ziplining, lounge areas… I did it all! I spent the whole day there and felt like I could have done it again the next day. But perhaps my favorite part of the park was when I wandered down the winding rocky path to see some sculptures (above water this time!), and perhaps the most beautiful and spectacular views. most breathtaking in the entire region!
While I spent most of my time at the Mía resort and on excursions, there was a nice downtown area full of restaurants and shops, just a 5 minute walk from the resort. A great place to grab a drink or two at happy hour, enjoy some fresh guacamole, shop for souvenirs, or just hang out and stretch your legs. Even as a solo traveler, I felt very safe and welcome.
As I looked through my airport photos and reminisced about the fun things I did, I couldn't help but feel like I'd been there for much longer than a few days: I Was completely immersed in the culture, the beauty, the relaxed atmosphere. It was exactly what I needed to recharge my batteries!
