THE World's Best Cities Report 2025compiled by marketing consultancy Resonance in conjunction with market research firm Ipsos, ranks cities based on what it defines as their quality of life, desirability and prosperity, all to achieve a score overall. Along with other data, it includes a survey of 22,000 people in 30 countries.
London has been crowned the world's best city in new rankings of more than 270 of the planet's biggest cities. But we take a closer look at the desirability part of the ranking, which measures a city's vibrancy in terms of culture, attractions, nightlife, gastronomy and international reputation.
The top 10 “friendliest” is a who's who of must-see metropolises, six of which are in Western Europe.
London, the best city, also leads the way in desirability, with its world-famous museums and nightlife. It is followed by Paris, which ranks first for shopping and tourism.
New York is the third most livable city in the world, thanks to its inimitable cultural offerings, including Broadway and top-notch restaurants.
Tokyo is at No. 4 thanks to its restaurants and shopping, while Rome, at No. 5, has millennia of history on every corner.
Barcelona (#6) offers sun, beaches, stunning architecture and vibrant nightlife and, elsewhere in Spain, Madrid (#7) is investing heavily in its parks and outdoor spaces.
Dubai, at number 8, has established itself as a playground for the entire world and Berlin, at number 9, is undoubtedly the winner of edgy cool.
Finally, there is Singapore, at number 10, whose appeal lies in its incredible food scene, from street stalls to gourmet restaurants, as well as its shopping and urban planning.
