- International tourist arrivals in early 2024 have almost reached pre-pandemic levels.
- Concerns about overtourism and mismanagement are increasing in historic towns and beaches.
- Fodor’s “No List” 2025 highlights destinations subject to unsustainable tourism pressures.
People are traveling more than ever, with international tourist arrivals in the first half of 2024 on track to reach pre-pandemic levels – and destinations around the world are feeling the effects.
With tiny historic European cities accommodating thousands more people than they were built for and picturesque beaches littered with plastic, concerns over overtourism and mismanagement of tourism is increasingly widespread.
Fodora long-running travel guide company, compiles an annual list of destinations where tourism pressures are most felt. The company's “no list” for 2025 includes destinations that have long struggled to handle tourism levels, as well as newer destinations or places where the situation is expected to get worse.
“The no list serves to highlight destinations where tourism is placing unsustainable pressures on local lands and communities. And these tensions must be addressed,” Fodor's said.
The company said it was not advocating a travel boycott against these destinations, but believed the issues needed to be reported so they could be resolved.
Tourism Experts previously told Business Insider that one of the main challenges facing places like this is that tourists tend to visit the exact same places at the same time. For busy destinations, they recommend trying to go there in the off-season or shoulder season. They also stressed the importance of being a responsible tourist and respecting all local laws.
