Choosing where to go on your next vacation just got a little easier.
National geographic has just released its “Best of the World 2025” list of top global destinations, curated by a team of international travel experts and editors.
The aim of the magazine's list is to “highlight extraordinary places around the world” while emphasizing aspects such as adventure, culture, conversation and sustainability.
“It's not just about celebrating these places, but also about inspiring adventure and promoting responsible, meaningful travel,” Starlight Williams, editor-in-chief of National Geographic, told CNBC Make It. “It’s the idea that no matter who you are as a traveler or what you’re interested in, there is something that inspires you, and you can take that as a launching pad to create your own best of the world. “
Although the list includes far-flung places around the world, including Greenland, Japan and India, National Geographic has also highlighted some places closer to home.. Among the 25 locations listed, three destinations are in the United States: Boise, Idaho; Ocala National Forest in Florida and Los Angeles, California.
“It’s more of a representation of the unique aspects of American culture and natural beauty that resonates around the world,” says Williams. “It’s the idea that you can feel this sense of wholeness that connects to the world right here.”
But the National Geographic guide isn't just about vacation destinations. It also strives to provide travelers with sustainable and eco-friendly places.
“This list gives people places that not only preserve the location for future generations, but also respect the local culture and environment, so they know there's a reason it's epic now , and we want to make sure that years from now, that will still exist,” she says.
