Autumn is a very special time for vacations. It's sweet, warm and incredibly romantic. Of course, there are iconic travel destinations in the fall, like Kyoto in Japan or Tuscany in Italy. But what about less clichéd variations? There are also many (and worth it!).
#1 Podgorica, Montenegro
Okay, Montenegro may not be first on fall travel lists, but isn't that a huge omission? Its vineyards in the fall are… well, breathtaking. If you want to see local wine production, rent bugatti and head to the Šipčanik wine cellar. They have tours and tastings. It's a fantastic escape in the best sense of the word.
By the way, a rental car should not only be useful for visiting wineries. You will also need it to visit the ancient ruins of Doclea. These are a short drive from town. Temperatures are generally cooler here and the place itself is super picturesque.
Overall, Podgorica is charming in autumn. Local markets are full of fall produce (this is your chance to taste seasonal Montenegrin cuisine!). The temperatures are mild (around 18°C), so it's really nice to be outside. Accommodation prices are modest but, of course, it is best to stay outside the city center.

#2 Atlantic City, United States
For most travelers, Atlantic City is primarily a summer destination. This means that fall offers a slower pace and more comfortable exploration. This is particularly relevant for traditionally busy places such as the famous promenade or beaches.
Another major draw to Atlantic City in the fall is that accommodations are about 30% cheaper. Now what could you do here? Well, first of all, you can visit the local seafood restaurants (fresh catch and ocean view). Additionally, you can explore the marina district. It's a little more comfortable to do it in cooler weather.
If you come here in the fall, keep in mind that many attractions may be open with reduced hours (just check in advance). The promenade is ideal for cycling (or walking). You probably won't need a car here.

#3 Harrisburg, United States
Pennsylvania's capital is picturesque, especially in the fall. Plus, many cool events are held here every year. This year, for example, they are organizing… a Cranberry and Chocolate Festival! It's true, it's crazy and so cool; this will take place from November 22 to 24. There will be lots of tasty things and live music.
Besides the events, a riverboat ride along the Susquehanna is a local classic. It gives you a unique vantage point to observe the changing leaves. And of course, there's the Broad Street Market. Two things to try here are the pumpkin whoopie pies and the spiced apple cider.

#4 Ottawa, Canada
Fall in Ottawa means two things: colorful foliage and vibrant festivals. As for the latter, one of the most impressive is the One World Bazaar. This started on September 17 and will continue until November 17. Then there's also the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival, Ottawa Magic Lights and much more. Many events are completely free.
What else to do here? If you're not really in the mood for crowded events or activities, Ottawa is also great for biking or walking along the Rideau Canal. And yes, the culinary scene peaks in the fall. Virtually all local restaurants offer seasonal menus with classic fall dishes like maple-glazed salmon.
As in most places, hotel rates drop so luxury stays are more accessible in the fall. The weather remains pleasant: during the day, temperatures are around 10-12°C (50-54°F), which should be ideal for outdoor activities.

#5 Krakow, Poland
And finally, there is Krakow. In the fall, it transforms into a quieter but equally charming town. For sights, head to Wawel Royal Castle. There are a lot fewer people than in summer. To relax, visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It's a very special experience.
Eating outside is still pleasant in autumn. Local cafes and bakeries offer seasonal pastries such as the popular “Pączki”. The latter is filled with rose jam (preferably enjoyed with hot coffee!).
