Why go now: Enjoy the sound of mariachi
The typical Mexican music of mariachis, featuring costumed groups playing stringed instruments and trumpets, originated in Jalisco in the 19th century and was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Experience it firsthand in Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco, home to the International Mariachi and Charreria Festival for two weeks in August and September.
“We fill the city with celebration, folklore and joy,” says Carlos Mateos, general director of the festival. Some 500 mariachi groups perform at the Teatro Degollado and in public squares; there are also parades, music workshops and thrilling rodeo competitions in charrería, Mexico's national sport.
