International travel is still expensive, but that doesn't mean you I can't enjoy a nice vacation either alone or with family, without breaking the bank in the process.
According to Kayak, flight prices in the United States are expected to decrease by 16% compared to last year and the average plane ticket will be $461. International flights are, however, on the rise, an increase of 10% year-on-year.

So where do you plan to go this year? GOBankingRates spoke with several travel industry experts about affordable destinations. Here's what they suggested.
Romania
Planning a trip to Europe? You might want to consider a stopover in Romania – or as a final destination.
“Romania has been overlooked by many as a travel destination, but it is a fascinating and beautiful country with so much to offer. It still has the charm, history, scenery and character of more expensive European destinations, without the high price tag,” said Stefanie Lambert, founder of Eurotravels by design.
When it comes to cost, Romania is still considered affordable, although you will need to factor in flights from your starting point.
“Four-star hotels are readily available for less than $100, with most around $70,” Lambert said. “A good meal will cost between $15 and $20, but you can find cheaper dishes for $10 and good street food for around $5.00.”
Specifically, discover destinations like Timisoara, Sibiu and Brasov.

Thailand
Kayak's research found that many parts of Asia still feature high on lists of places to go. One of these destinations is Thailand.
My wife and I are avid travelers,” said Marc Bjerring, co-founder of Spivo. “(Thailand offers) budget-friendly experiences with accommodations ranging from $15 to $35 per night, meals under $5, and daily expenses around $25 to $40.”
Thailand isn't the only country in Asia that's ideal for budget-conscious travelers, but it's certainly worth a visit.

Dominican Republic
Located in the West Indies, the Dominican Republic is a popular tourist destination and a hit among those looking for a relaxing beachside getaway. It's also even more affordable than many other places.
This is one of the main reasons why Sully Montero, romantic travel specialist at Teaching travel Discoversuggested it.
“Multiple direct/non-stop airport hubs make flights very affordable and all-inclusive resorts offer guests the best value in amenities,” Montero said. “The average price for two people for six nights is $2,500 to $3,500, including airfare and accommodation.”
The Balkans
Located in southeastern Europe, the Balkans tend to be slightly less touristy than other European destinations and remain surprisingly affordable.
“Compared to Western Europe, the Balkans offer an inexpensive adventure. Entrance fees to museums and attractions vary but are generally lower than in Western Europe,” said Tim Hentschel, co-founder and CEO of HotelPlanner. “Plus, many cities offer free walking tours and have beautiful squares and historic monuments to explore for free. »
But what is the average cost?
“Daily budgets range from $30 for modest adventurers to around $100 for luxury seekers,” Hentschel said. “To maximize savings, visit during shoulder seasons (spring and fall to avoid peak season prices).”
Mexico
Mexico, and more specifically Cancun, has long been a favorite destination for travelers looking to get away without paying a premium price. And the price remains reasonable for travelers this year, especially for tourists based in the United States.
“In addition to having the most direct flights from almost every major U.S. airport and all-inclusive options, Cancun offers guests the opportunity to explore the culture of Mexico with the incredible tours/excursions offered,” said Montero.

The average price for two travelers staying six nights, she added, is about $2,000 to $3,000, including accommodation, flights and transfers. The average trip price is $50 to $100 per person.
Costa Rica
Many Central American countries, including Costa Rica, are still affordable to visit.
“Costa Rica has been my most requested destination so far in 2024, and for good reason,” Montero said. “If guests land at Liberia International Airport and stay on the west coast (Guanacaste region), they can experience some of the incredible adventure spots Costa Rica has to offer at a fraction of the price. It's a perfect place for those who love outdoor adventures, from ziplining to whitewater rafting! »
According to Montero, a six-night trip to Costa Rica for two people costs on average between $3,500 and $4,500, including airfare and accommodation.
Vietnam or Cambodia
Thailand isn't the only Southeast Asian country worth visiting for budget travelers. Vietnam and Cambodia are also in the lead.
“Flights from the United States to Southeast Asia can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500 or more,” Hentschel said. “You can find hostels in Southeast Asia for as little as $5 a night and guesthouses for around $10 to $20 a night. Budget hotels typically cost between $30 and $50 per night, while luxury hotels can cost hundreds of dollars per night.
If you visit these destinations, you can also cut costs on food and ground transportation.
“If you prefer to dine out, you can find budget-friendly options for around $5 to $10 per meal,” Hentschel said. “You can expect to pay between $10 and $20 for a bus ride between major cities.”
Poland
Another affordable yet popular travel destination suggested by Lambert is Poland.
Like many other travel destinations, Poland has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, landscapes, history and architecture. It is also home to 16 world heritage sites and the largest castle in the world.
From the East Coast, expect to pay between $600 and $800 for a round-trip plane ticket. The average cost of a hotel for three nights is $154.
