I spent an entire summer with my sister in off-campus housing in Providence when I was 14, and it was probably the best summer of my life. I actually fell in love with the city during this visit and am currently thinking about moving my family there. Let me tell you why. To begin with, Providence is Perfect town size for a family. None of the chaos and stress of New York or other large urban centers, but all the cultural attractions and amenities any family could need. If you plan to visit, I highly recommend spending time with the kids Roger Williams Park– a 427-acre park with tons of scenic trails, a zoo and botanical center, and a carousel village that hosts Food Truck Fridays where you can find fantastic cheap eats. (There is also a playground, several “little free libraries” and numerous recreational areas.)
If you want to soak up some art and culture, head to the RISD Museum on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. when admission is free. There are also regularly Gallery evenings where visitors and locals can hop on a tram and visit all the city's hottest art spots for free. A little hungry? Head to Federal Hill for fine Italian cuisine or simply enjoy a casual, family-friendly dinner at Pizza Pie-er which serves the best pie I have ever eaten. And if you're still looking for ways to fill your itinerary, I can assure you that you'll never tire of strolling the cobblestone streets of downtown, strolling the picturesque pedestrian bridge… or perhaps spending a part of your money available to Providence Square.
